Location

We are located in Richmond, KY (just south of Lexington), however my family is located in Chattaroy, WV with of course, some beautiful American Bulldogs of thier own.

Our Family Dog History

We have always had dogs in our lives ranging from mixed breeds, three (3) Rottweilers, three (3) bullmastiffs , Laborador, Doberman, and now the American Bulldog since 1995. All these different breeds had certain qualities that set that apart from others and made them special in their own unique way. However, there is not one of the mentioned dogs that had a combination size (rottweiler, bullmastiff), agility (laborador, mixed breed), personality (laborador), protection (rottweiler), companionship (laborador), and most importantly a pure smart family dog. The American Bulldog breed has really expressed all of these qualities that are very important to us in a dog and thats why we have kept the breed within our family for this long.

Our Mission

Our mission at Howard's American Bulldogs is to continue this great breed by being able to offer the occasional litter that will bring the same joy into other families lives as this breed has done to ours.  Our focus is to have great American Bulldogs that are just everyday good Ol' Dogs.

There is a lot of good and bad things that people say about the American Bulldog and whether this breed is not one set standard being (Scott/Standard), (Johnson), or any other that people may try to call their American Bulldog. To us that is not what is important. We are striving to have a beautiful American Bulldog with correct confirmation, agility, and always a good natural protector of the family. We personally fell that the "Johnson" and "Scott/Standard" types have their good and bad qualities, but however, we really feel that a combination of both types really sticks to what the history tells us about the breed (before Johnsons and Scotts).

I am not going to try and discredit either of the two most well know breed types of American Bulldogs, but it seems to me as if many of the dogs are missing a few "parts" of their history.

Johnson Type

Over the last several years I have looked at hundreds of the so called Johnson American Bulldogs and many being very different looking than if one would picture if they have only read the history of the American Bulldog and never seen one. The history tells us that these dogs are very athletic, courageous, and powerful dogs. We personally feel that the Johnson Breed covers the courageous and powerful dog, but in many cases we have witnessed that the Johnson Breed lacks much of the needed athleticism and stamina to carry on the "history" of the American Bulldog.

This does not apply to every Johnson American Bulldog by any means and we absolutely have a sincere appreciation for what people have done for this breed, but nothing can be perfect and we by no means, believe our American Bulldogs are. We personally just fell here at Howard's American Bulldogs we can breed much of the needed Johnson, Ol' Southern, and Scott/Standard bloodlines together to create an American Bulldog that will be much like history tells us of this special breed of dog.

Scott/Standard Type

During the last several years while looking at the Johnson Breeds you can't help but come across many of the Scott/Standard Breeds. This breed, much like the Johnson, have so much history in their bloodline and it can be seen in person, and from the pictures available. These dogs have the speed, courage, temperment, but sometimes we feel that that don't possess much of the needed power to be a superior catch dog as it was in the past. This does not apply to every Scott/Standard Type, and again our sincere appreciation goes out to everyone who has helped in the development of the breed. However, here at Howard's American Bulldogs we feel we can capitalize and bring the much needed power to the American Bulldog.

After reading the following about the most popular types of American Bulldogs in the world, we sincerely hope that nobody is offended by our comments, hopefully a true American Bulldogger can and will appreciate what we are trying to introduce into this breed, and that is to ensure that the American Bulldog will continue to live up to the history that has been told by many.

Our Dogs

Here at Howard's American Bulldogs we are going to try to bring together the power and size from the Johnson Type, and the speed with stamina from the Scott/Standard Type. We feel that this combination of the two most well known American Bulldog Types can really make an appreciable effect on this special breed.

How we "work" our American Bulldogs

Since we began advertising here on the internet that we produce American Bulldogs, we have received emails and etc. saying or implying it is wrong of us at Howard's American Bulldogs to sell a working breed dog and not have the dog(s) perform actual work.... Well, let me start off by saying that "work" is expressed in many forms not just weight pulling, protection training, and wild boar hunting... We don't believe weight pulling has anything to do with real work, but more of just a hobby of the handler (completely understandable)... Protection training on the other hand can be very beneficial to a police dog and other types of "work" that can really apply to a job and have a benefit of some sort or again, a hobby of the handler (completely understandable)... I have been criticized by many who spend countless hours with their dogs and thousands of dollars to train a dog, and now say "this American Bulldog has received protection training and won many awards at different shows", but if you show up at their home all of these dogs that have won these numerous awards and etc. stay locked up in a cage/lot most of their life and never need to be trained in the first place because they would never have the opportunity to use the training they have received.

Not to mention, every American Bulldog we have owned has received NO protection training, but when we test our bulldogs by having a strange person inflict some type of wrong doing on us, all of the dogs have never hesitated to show pure aggression until their behavior has been corrected to an acceptable manner... My reason for saying this is that we truly believe you don't have to perform protection training to have an American Bulldog to protect your family or property, but if you do decide to protection train your dog, please use caution.

Our definition of "work" for the American Bulldog has been quite different from most people we have spoken with or seen. We do allow our dogs to be natural protectors of our family and property by allowing them to roam freely and be territorial animals as they are naturally. For example, there has been countless and I mean countless times we have come home and somebody will be standing against the wall with our dogs not letting them move a foot literally, unless we allow them to (sometimes the dogs keep the wrong people stuck at the house, but thats ok)... This is not something we ever trained our dogs to do, but this is what they do as dogs naturally.

Another form of "work" we do is have our dogs go with me to work in the Appalachia Mountains... This might not sound like much to most, but if you have never been in the mountains of Eastern KY or West Virginia you might not understand completely. But to explain in short, we have countless wild dogs, rabid coyotes, wild elk, and many types of people you don't really want to ever see alone in these rural areas. I can't really count the number of times I have gotten out of my vehicle and been chased back in by dogs that belong to people near by that don't appreciate strangers near their property. By having Diesel with me apparently changes the attitudes of just about every dog that I have encountered, even the ones I had already been chased by before. This behavior by strange dogs seemed to stop once I started bringing Diesel, and to me this is what I call "work" I no longer have to wonder if that dog standing in that yard is going to bite me when I start walking into the woods....

In the mountains of Eastern KY is home to the largest Elk Herd east of the Mississippi. Just so you know, Elk are much larger than deer by at least 400lbs, and are not scared of people at all.. After running into a Bull Elk during "rutting" season has forever changed my feelings of being alone in the mountains with a Bull Elk looking right at me. To make a long story short I called Diesel who was behind me to my side before he noticed the Bull Elk who had just came into sight (about 100ft away). Diesel began being very aggressive trying to get at the Elk (FYI he does not stand a chance against a bull elk) and the Bull Elk just stood there snorting and showing no signs of running away while Diesel was barking, growling, and tearing up dirt trying to get at the Elk.. Eventually, the Bull Elk lost whatever kind of interest he had after what seemed about a minute of staring at each other and calmly walked away. Bull Elk are very aggressive in "rutting" season and should never be approached nor stand 100ft from one by yourself in the mountains many miles from anybody that could help. My reason for telling this story is to explain the definition of "work" to us. I believe without a doubt there could have been a different outcome if Diesel had not been there to deter the elk away.

In conclusion I would like to add that "working" with our dogs this way truly allows us to spend quality time together yet allow the instincts that are instilled into true American Bulldogs run wild when the situation calls for it... At the end of the day we all need to remember that spending quality time with a dog comes in many forms some are just different than others..
